Two suspected robbers were fatally wounded following a shootout with members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) on the afternoon of 13 April 2026.

According to police reports, TRT members were patrolling along Houtkop Road when they identified a vehicle with false registration numbers. The vehicle was suspected to have been hijacked.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle using sirens. The vehicle sped off and its occupants fired shots at the police, initiating a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire.

The suspects’ vehicle subsequently capsized. One suspect attempted to flee the overturned vehicle on foot but collapsed a few metres away. Both suspects were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police seized a firearm from the suspects. Explosives were also discovered inside the vehicle and have been taken for further investigation.

Authorities confirmed the vehicle was stolen and linked to a case reported in Carletonville in January 2026.
