A 48-year-old man from Roodepan was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old girl on Christmas Day in 2024.
The incident occurred at approximately 18:00 on Wednesday, 25 December 2024, when the victim was walking home. The accused accosted her in the street and forcibly dragged her into a nearby shack. Once inside, he undressed the victim, threw her onto a bed, and raped her.
A passer-by witnessed the incident and intervened, forcefully gaining entry to the shack. The witness found the accused in the act of raping the child, removed him from the scene, and alerted the police. The suspect was arrested on the scene.
A rape case was registered at Roodepan Police Station and assigned to Warrant Officer Jakob Johannes du Plessis of the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The investigating officer successfully opposed all bail applications, ensuring the accused remained in custody until the case was finalized.
The court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
