Trade surplus for May

South Africa showed a trade surplus of R95 billion in May, raising the accumulated surplus for the year to R19.5 billion.

The accumulated surplus is an improvement of R32,81 billion compared to the previous year’s comparative period, which was a deficit of R13,29 billion.

Imports for this year amounted to R445.3 billion and exports amounted to R464.78 billion. The decline in imports of 1,3% is more indicative of the state of recession in the economy but has contributed to trade surplus.
