The Islamic State (IS) extremist group released a video on Sunday purporting to show its attack on an air force base in Niger’s capital, Niamey.
The footage, distributed by the group’s propaganda arm, the Al-Minbar Al-I’lami (AMAC) news agency, claims to document the assault that occurred on Thursday. The attack targeted the base located at the Diori Hamani International Airport.
Niger’s military junta confirmed that the assault resulted in four soldiers being wounded and several aircraft damaged.
This incident occurs amid an escalated militant campaign across the Sahel region by groups affiliated with both IS and al-Qaeda over the past year. Since taking power in a coup last year, Niger’s junta has cut security ties with Western nations and turned to Russia for assistance in combating insurgent groups.
