The Giyani Regional Court has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to a 32-year-old man for the 2022 rape of his 14-year-old neighbour. The sentence was delivered on Friday, 07 November 2025.
The court heard that on the evening of Saturday, 01 October 2022, the victim was walking to her home in Mbaula Village after watching a soccer tournament. At approximately 20:30, she encountered her neighbour, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, and his friend.
The accused grabbed the victim’s hands and, when she resisted, assaulted her with open hands. He then forcefully took her to his friend’s residence where he raped her. Following the assault, he threatened the victim, instructing her not to tell anyone and issuing further disturbing threats against her friends.
The victim managed to escape during the night and reported the crime to her friend’s family. She was accompanied by them to her home and was then taken to a local clinic for medical attention. The matter was subsequently reported to the South African Police Service.
A rape case docket was opened and assigned to Detective Sergeant Conny Mapengo of the Giyani Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Through diligent investigation, Sergeant Mapengo managed to arrest the suspect just two days after the incident. The detective successfully opposed bail, ensuring the accused remained in custody until his conviction.
In final sentencing, the court ruled as follows:
-
Count 1: Rape – Life imprisonment
-
Count 2: Six (6) months imprisonment
