A swift response by local crime fighters led to the recovery of a hijacked vehicle and a homemade firearm in Khayelitsha on Tuesday.

The incident began when members of the Makhaza Anti-Hijacking Team acted on intelligence regarding suspects in a Toyota Etios, who were reportedly driving through the Khayelitsha area and committing robberies.

According to sources, the members spotted the vehicle driving past them. As they turned their vehicle to pursue, the driver of the Toyota Etios sped off.

The chase was short-lived, as the suspects’ vehicle was soon found abandoned in a nearby informal settlement. Upon searching the car, the team discovered a homemade rifle along with ammunition inside.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the Toyota Etios had been reported hijacked in Parow in July 2025.

The suspects remain at large, and the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
