Kevin Alister Maponyane (34) appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 28 October 2025, facing two counts of murder for the deaths of his father and sister. The court remanded him in custody and postponed the case to Tuesday, 11 November 2025.
The Family Murders and Co-accused
According to police, investigative work linked Maponyane to the murder of his father, Johannes Maponyane, in September 2023, and his 44-year-old sister, Elissa Nicolene Maponyane, in May 2024. Both killings occurred in the Ikageng Location, Potchefstroom.
Five other suspects were arrested shortly after the sister’s murder on 23 May 2024 and first appeared in court on 27 May 2024. Police reports indicate that Kevin Maponyane allegedly hired these men—identified as Mpho Gift Visagie (20), Thebogo Lipholo (33), Phoka Raphoka (37), Mpho Bennet Lombard (33), and John Ramasubela Mohahabe (49)—to carry out both murders.
Ongoing Separate Trial and Firearm Charges
In a separate and ongoing legal proceeding, Maponyane is already on trial at the Klerksdorp High Court. That case involves two additional, unrelated murders committed in September 2018 and February 2019.
Furthermore, he faces four distinct charges for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. These charges stem from cases registered in Ikageng in September 2018 and September 2020, and in Potchefstroom in March and May 2019.
