A violent incident in the Beaconsfield area, where police officers were assaulted while attempting to make an arrest, has been met with widespread condemnation from provincial leadership and police unions.

The Northern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Limakatso Koloi, has strongly condemned the alleged attack. “It is unacceptable that law enforcement officers and particularly women in uniform continue to face violence and hostility while carrying out their responsible duties of working and protecting our society,” MEC Koloi stated.

The incident, captured in a video that has since gone viral, shows two men allegedly resisting arrest. According to police reports, the officers were conducting a routine operation when they attempted to arrest a suspect and came under attack. The altercation occurred in full view of local residents, leaving many in the community troubled and fearful.

One Beaconsfield resident who witnessed the assault expressed shock and concern over the deteriorating safety in the area. “These things happen every day because of the people drinking every day. People using drugs here. All of all kind of bad stuff happens here every day. We’re not safe here anymore. Not even our children,” the resident said. “To attack the police officer already is bad enough. And to attack the woman as well is also very wrong… it was really wrong for that incident to happen.”

The South African Police Union (SAPU) and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) have also condemned the incident, stating it highlights the dangers police face in the line of duty. The unions are calling for police management to take action.

A spokesperson for the unions voiced particular concern over the judicial outcome, stating, “They were violated. They were assaulted while executing their duties. And it’s more concerning and very sad to learn that the suspects were released on warning… which then tells us that the criminals will find comfort within our courts.”

The two accused men have been released on bail and are facing charges of assault, resisting arrest, defeating the ends of justice, and malicious damage to property. They are scheduled to reappear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court next month.
