The Kimberley Regional Court has handed down an eight-year sentence to a 15-year-old boy for the rape of a five-year-old child. The sentencing was conducted in accordance with the Child Justice Act.

The conviction stems from a disturbing incident on 18 December 2024 in Longlands, near Delportshoop. The court found that the teenager lured the young victim into a bathroom at his parents’ home and assaulted him.

Following the attack, the five-year-old returned to his own home, where he was observed to be in visible discomfort and had difficulty sitting. His aunt noticed his condition and questioned him, prompting the child to break down and disclose the assault.

The authorities were notified immediately. The victim was taken to a hospital for a medical examination, and a case was opened with the police.

The investigation led to the swift arrest of the 15-year-old suspect on 20 December 2024. As the accused is a minor, his arrest and subsequent legal processing were guided by the provisions of the Child Justice Act.

He made his first court appearance on 23 December 2024, after which he was detained at a place of safety for juveniles in Kimberley. The accused later abandoned his right to apply for bail.

The sentence comprises five years of compulsory detention at a youth and childcare centre, to be followed by a further three years of imprisonment.
