
The unwavering commitment of an off-duty police officer resulted in the arrest of a 31-year-old taxi driver and the recovery of a loaded firearm on Tuesday evening.
According to police records, the incident occurred on September 30, 2025, at approximately 21:00. An off-duty officer attached to the Hankey South African Police Service (SAPS) witnessed a quarrel amongst taxi drivers. During the altercation, the officer noticed that one of the drivers was in possession of a firearm.
Demonstrating immediate initiative, the off-duty member called for backup. However, before reinforcements could arrive, the suspect entered a white Suzuki sedan and drove off in the direction of Humansdorp.
Responding members gave chase and successfully spotted the vehicle in Humansdorp. The car was stopped and subjected to a search.
The operation led to the arrest of the 31-year-old male occupant for the illegal possession of a firearm. A loaded firearm, found in his possession, was confiscated as evidence.
The suspect is due to make an appearance before the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court in the near future.
