The De Aar Regional Court has handed down a 40-year direct prison sentence to 39-year-old Alfred Mateta for two separate rape incidents that terrorized the Sunrise area of De Aar in 2019.

The court found Mateta guilty on two counts of rape, detailing the brutal nature of the attacks which occurred months apart.

The first incident took place in the early hours of 25 August 2019. An 18-year-old woman was accosted by Mateta while on her way home. She was dragged into a ditch and raped multiple times.

In the second attack, on 30 November 2019 at approximately 20:30, a 23-year-old woman was assaulted under similar circumstances. While walking home, she was grabbed by Mateta and raped in a ditch.

Mateta’s reign of terror was cut short when he was arrested on 09 December 2019. His arrest was secured through forensic evidence that conclusively linked him to the first rape. The two cases were later consolidated for trial.

In a final ruling, the De Aar Regional Court sentenced Mateta to 25 years’ imprisonment for the first rape and a further 15 years for the second, resulting in a total effective sentence of 40 years.

In addition to his prison term, the court has ordered that Alfred Mateta’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
