The Northern Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) Management has welcomed the life imprisonment sentence handed down to a 43-year-old man for the rape of an 11-year-old girl in Niekerkshoop.
The conviction and sentencing took place in the Griekwastad Regional Court on Thursday, 18 September 2025, bringing a close to a case that began in February of the previous year.
According to the evidence presented in court, the accused, who is known to the victim and her family, lured the young girl to his residence on 25 February 2024. Once there, he pushed her onto his bed and forcefully raped her.
The victim bravely reported the incident to her family, who subsequently alerted the authorities. The SAPS acted swiftly, arresting the accused the following day, 26 February 2024. The man remained in custody throughout the legal proceedings, culminating in this week’s sentencing.
In addition to the life term, the court declared the convicted rapist unfit to possess a firearm. Furthermore, his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, a measure designed to protect vulnerable communities from repeat offenders.
