In a demonstration of the judicial system’s commitment to holding lawbreakers accountable, the Springbok Regional Court sentenced 46-year-old Kelvin James Brown to a further six years imprisonment on Wednesday.
Brown, a former Sergeant with the South African Police Services (SAPS), pleaded guilty to five counts of corruption related to offenses committed during his tenure with the police force.
The state presented undeniable evidence detailing Brown’s criminal activities. The charges stem from his acceptance of a R3,000 gratification from an undercover police agent. Furthermore, Brown admitted to using his position to introduce the undercover agent to drug dealers to facilitate illegal drug transactions. His crimes also included providing a police escort for the safe transportation of narcotics, a duty he performed using state-owned vehicles.
Currently, Brown is already serving a life sentence for a separate, undisclosed matter. The court ordered that this new six-year sentence run concurrently with his existing life term. Additionally, Brown was formally declared unfit to possess a firearm.
