A mass shooting in Gugulethu has claimed the lives of two people and left three others injured, marking the latest incident in a wave of violent crime plaguing the area.

According to police, officers responded to a complaint of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered five victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. An adult male and female were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The wounded, two men aged 18 and 32 and an 18-year-old woman, were transported to a medical facility for treatment.

The suspects fled the scene and have not yet been arrested. A police spokesperson confirmed that the motive for the attack is unknown and forms a critical part of the ongoing investigation.

The shooting has exacerbated fears among local residents, who report living in constant anxiety due to high crime levels. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed her daily terror, stating, “I’m not feeling safe… You can never guarantee your safety here. Even when you’re walking to school, it’s not safe for you. You can get marked on your way, get killed or something.” She specifically cited the threat of “amapara” (criminals) who rob pedestrians and the pervasive fear caused by frequent shootings.

This incident is not isolated. The report notes that two other people were gunned down in the Gugulethu area over the weekend. In a separate but related incident, three men were killed in a suspected gang-related shooting in Happy Valley, Mfuleni on the Cape Flats.

In response to the escalating violence, police resources in the Cape Flats are expected to be bolstered in the coming months. This follows an agreement between the City of Cape Town and [acting] Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, which will see the city provide space in a municipal building in Mfuleni to accommodate more police officers.

The violence extends beyond Gugulethu. Police confirmed that the death toll in the Kraaifontein area rose to 14 in a single week last week due to a number of separate incidents. These included three fatal shootings and a stabbing death, with dockets also opened for attempted murder and rape. Two people are currently being questioned by police in connection with shooting incidents in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein.

The community awaits further developments as police continue their investigations into these attacks.
