In a case that has been welcomed by provincial authorities, 27-year-old Dantin Brits was sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment by the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 08 September 2025.
Brits was convicted on a charge of fraud relating to an attempt to purchase a high-value vehicle in July 2023. The court heard that he had applied to buy a Toyota Landcruiser valued at R1.4 million from a dealership in Klerksdorp.
His scheme unraveled when an alert employee at the dealership discovered that Brits had submitted supporting documentation belonging to an individual residing in the United States of America.
The dealership immediately notified members of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit. Investigators then set up an entrapment operation. Brits returned to the dealership to finalize the contract, whereupon he was arrested by waiting officers.
Following his arrest, Brits made several court appearances throughout the legal process, which culminated in his conviction and this week’s sentencing.
