
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the investigation and prosecution of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) cases. This pledge was underscored by the recent conviction and sentencing of a 31-year-old man in the Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s Court.
The incident, which led to the conviction, occurred on 06 January 2023 at approximately 10:00. The accused, Oneboy Tekoetsile Masilo, arrived at his home in the Masakeng area of Jan Kempdorp while under the influence of alcohol. There, he verbally abused and assaulted his 29-year-old partner and caused damage to household furniture before fleeing the scene.
The victim subsequently reported the attack to the police, who opened a case docket for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.
The investigation was assigned to Detective Sergeant Sidwell Dastile of the Hartswater Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Sergeant Dastile pursued the case diligently, successfully tracing and apprehending the accused after a period of evasion. The detective opposed bail, ensuring Masilo remained in custody until the finalization of the trial.
On Wednesday, 03 September 2025, the Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s Court found Oneboy Tekoetsile Masilo guilty on both charges. For the count of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, he was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with eight months wholly suspended for three years. On the charge of malicious damage to property, he received a four-month imprisonment sentence, wholly suspended for two years.
The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently. Furthermore, Masilo was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
