A coordinated multi-disciplinary police operation has resulted in the arrest of a male suspect in connection with a violent cash-in-transit robbery that occurred on the N8 near Bloemfontein on Tuesday, 2 September 2025.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Botshabelo Magistrates Court on Thursday, 4 September 2025.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded when a cash delivery van was attacked by a group of armed suspects while travelling on the N8. The assailants fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. Later that same day, a marked police vehicle was shot at by suspects believed to be involved in the robbery. No injuries were reported in the shooting.
In response, a multi-disciplinary team was immediately assembled to track down the perpetrators. The operation comprised members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) unit, Crime Intelligence, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), Visible Policing, the Explosives Unit, and the Local Criminal Record Center (LCRC).
Acting on intelligence, the team pinpointed a house in Section H, Botshabelo. Upon investigation, they discovered two vehicles matching the description of those used in the robbery. One of the vehicles had been reported stolen in Bloemfontein in May 2025.
A subsequent search of the premises and the vehicles yielded a significant cache of evidence, including several assault rifles, a pistol, multiple rounds of ammunition, bullet-resistant vests, and clothing items. An unknown concoction inside a bottle was also seized.
This evidence led investigators to the arrested suspect. A vehicle he was driving at the time of his apprehension was also recovered by police.
The investigation remains ongoing.
