A 47-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) member allegedly shot five people, resulting in three fatalities and two injuries, before taking his own life in Hennenman.

The deceased officer was stationed in Hennenman serving as a Rural Safety Coordinator. Following the incident, the SAPS in the Free State released a statement expressing shock and deep concern over the tragedy.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia strongly condemned the shooting and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. Lesia has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that preceded the incident.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will take over the matter. Cases of murder, attempted murder, and an inquest are to be registered and investigated by the directorate.

Authorities stated that further information will be communicated as the investigation unfolds.
