The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed her shock following a devastating house fire in Itsani village that resulted in the deaths of three young children this past Friday.
The tragic incident occurred on August 29, 2025. According to police reports, officers on duty received an emergency call alerting them to a house on fire with children trapped inside. They responded urgently to the scene, where firefighters were already engaged in battling the blaze.
Once the fire was successfully extinguished, the bodies of the three children were discovered inside the structure. The victims, two siblings aged 2 and 4, were burned beyond recognition.
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that the children had been playing near a one-room house prior to the incident. However, it remains unclear how they subsequently ended up inside the building. The exact cause of the fire is also still unknown at this stage.
In response to the tragedy, Lieutenant General Hadebe has directed that forensic and fire experts be brought in to assist with the ongoing investigation to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Furthermore, the Provincial Commissioner has instructed police to investigate the possibility of charging the parents or guardians with negligence or failure to protect the minors.
Police investigations are continuing.
