Despite recent trade tensions, South Africa continues to maintain strong diplomatic engagement with the United States, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola stated during a media briefing in Pretoria on Thursday.

The minister’s comments come after the U.S. imposition of 30% tariffs on certain South African goods, a point of contention between the two nations. Minister Lamola, however, emphasized that the broader bilateral relationship remains robust and unaffected by the trade dispute.

“South Africa and the United States continue to engage at the highest level,” Lamola said, citing a recent teleconference between President Cyril Ramaphosa and U.S. President Donald Trump. He acknowledged that discussions on issues like the tariffs “highlight areas of concern,” but insisted “the bilateral relationship remains resilient and continuing in terms of engagements.”

Outlining a schedule of high-level talks, Lamola provided evidence of ongoing diplomacy. He noted recent meetings with the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. David Green, and a video conference between South Africa’s Deputy Minister Alvin Botes and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Lando. Discussions covered mutual concerns, including trade, geopolitical issues, and domestic matters.

Further demonstrating the active dialogue, Lamola announced that a U.S. Congressional staff delegation from the House Foreign Affairs Committee is expected in South Africa later this week. The Minister also revealed he has held discussions with a senior advisor to President Trump on African affairs.

Beyond U.S. relations, the minister reiterated that maintaining “strong and cordial ties with key global partners” is a cornerstone of South Africa’s foreign policy. The briefing also included remarks on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, underscoring the wide range of issues on the department’s agenda.

The government’s statement appears aimed at reassuring the public and international observers that, despite economic disagreements, its strategic diplomatic channels with a major global partner remain open and productive.
