A wave of taxi-related violence has gripped parts of Cape Town, culminating in a deadly shooting at the Macassar Heights taxi pickup point on Thursday that left two men dead and two bystanders wounded.

According to police, armed suspects opened fire on the two men, who were standing next to a taxi. One of the deceased is believed to have been the owner of the vehicle. The attack has been directly linked by authorities to the ongoing and violent conflict within the local minibus taxi industry.

The violence did not stop with the intended targets. A 55-year-old woman and another man, who were standing at a nearby shop, were caught in the crossfire and wounded. The woman was reportedly on her way to buy bread when the shooting erupted. She was rushed to Tygerberg Hospital for treatment, and her condition is currently unknown.

Forensic experts were swiftly on the scene, meticulously combing the area for evidence. A visible bullet hole was seen in the windscreen of the taxi, which was examined and processed by specialists. The suspects fled the scene in an unknown getaway vehicle and remain at large.

A manhunt is now underway. Police have registered two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. Individuals can contact Detective Captain Lukanyo Magatla at 082 411 3245 or provide information anonymously via Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or the MySAPS mobile application.

This incident is not isolated. The shooting was confirmed to be part of a broader surge in violence. Just in the last two days, five individuals have been killed in separate taxi-related attacks in areas including Mitchells Plain and Eastridge.

The community has been left shaken and fearful. Many residents expressed deep concern for their safety to reporters, with some refusing to speak on camera for fear of reprisals from the perpetrators.

In response to the escalating crisis, the provincial government has called for calm. The Community Safety MEC is reportedly in high-level engagements with her counterpart from KwaZulu-Natal to address the alarming trend of inter-provincial violence, including the hiring of assassins from one province to carry out hits in another.

As the investigation continues, a palpable sense of tension hangs over Macassar Heights, a stark reminder of the deadly conflict playing out on the streets of Cape Town.
