The Tzaneen Regional Court has handed down two life imprisonment sentences to a 40-year-old man for the repeated rape of his 13-year-old niece. The sentencing was delivered on Monday, 25 August 2025, bringing a close to a case that began in August 2023.
The court heard that the accused, who is the uncle of the victim, followed the young girl into a room in a village within the Bolobedu policing area on 25 August 2023. He closed the door, threatened her, and instructed her not to scream before raping her. The proceedings revealed that this horrific incident was not an isolated occurrence.
The crime was brought to light after the brave victim confided in her teacher, who subsequently alerted the authorities. The case was registered and assigned to Detective Sergeant Nyiko Ronald Shipalana of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit.
Det. Sgt. Shipalana’s exemplary investigative work led to the swift arrest of the accused on 30 August 2023. The man was denied bail and remained in custody from the time of his arrest until his final sentencing.
The accused was found guilty on both counts of rape levied against him. The court sentenced him as follows:
-
Count 1: Rape – Life Imprisonment
-
Count 2: Rape – Life Imprisonment
The court ordered that the two life sentences run concurrently.
