A police operation targeting an alleged online robbery syndicate culminated in a dramatic shootout and vehicle crash in Midrand on Tuesday, leaving five suspects and one police officer injured.
According to police on the scene, the incident appears to be the result of a sting operation. The suspects are alleged to have used online platforms, including Facebook, to advertise vehicles for sale. They would then lure potential buyers to a location, kidnap them, and force them to withdraw cash.
“From what we understand, these are alleged online robbers who lure victims using vehicles,” said the reporter who was reporting live from the cordoned-off gravel road scene. “The previous post that they had posted was still up and the police were following up on this particular matter.”
The operation unfolded when police officers, accompanied by an undercover agent posing as a buyer, arrived to meet the suspects. The encounter quickly escalated into a shootout. During the ensuing altercation, the suspects’ vehicle capsized, and a police vehicle was left with multiple bullet holes and front-end damage, indicating a violent and intense exchange of fire.
“From where I’m standing I can count about five to six bullet holes from the windshield and even on the side,” he reported, describing the damaged police vehicle.
Five suspects were apprehended at the scene, all sustaining injuries. The injuries are believed to be a combination of gunshot wounds and injuries sustained from their vehicle overturning. Emergency Medical Services were seen treating the wounded suspects at the location before moving them for further care.
One police officer was also injured in the operation. While the officer’s condition was not immediately disclosed, it was confirmed that they are receiving medical treatment.
Authorities confirmed that several firearms were recovered from the scene. While five suspects are in custody, police indicated that others may have fled following the crash and a manhunt is underway for those individuals.
The Deputy Commissioner of the province, General Fred Kekana, was present at the crime scene and is expected to provide a detailed briefing later. Police sources at the scene indicated that this syndicate has been under investigation for some time, linked to a number of similar cases reported in the Midrand and surrounding areas.
The scene remains active and cordoned off as police continue their evidence-gathering process and investigation into the alleged syndicate’s activities.
