GAUTENG — A massive multi-agency operation culminated in the apprehension of three armed robbery suspects following a dramatic, high-speed Pretoria R21 highway chase on Thursday afternoon. The tactical takedown resulted in the recovery of an illegal weapon and left two individuals hospitalized.
The joint manhunt was triggered by actionable intelligence identifying a silver Kia Rio as the primary vehicle in a string of freeway holdups. According to authorities, the occupants of the sedan had been terrorizing motorists along the R21, robbing them at gunpoint of mobile phones and personal effects.
Executing the interception was a formidable coalition led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD). They were heavily reinforced by a coalition of private security entities, specifically Bidvest Protea Coin Airwing, Brinant Security, Noordvaal Security, Monitor Net Security, ADT Fidelity Security, Tracker South Africa, Vision Tactical, and Proshield Security.
At approximately 13:00 on 25 June 2026, surveillance teams spotted the target vehicle navigating toward the Pretoria Central Business District. As law enforcement units shadowed the car and called in backup, officers initiated a traffic stop to verify the occupants’ identities. However, the driver ignored the directives, flooring the accelerator and weaving dangerously through traffic to escape.
The situation escalated when a private security cruiser pulled parallel to the fleeing Kia Rio. During this maneuver, one of the fugitives leaned out and aimed a handgun directly at the pursuing officers. Facing an imminent lethal threat, the tactical team authorized a forced vehicle takedown. The maneuver caused the suspects to lose control, sending the sedan crashing to a halt on the highway shoulder.
Three individuals bailed out of the disabled car and attempted to sprint away, but the surrounding perimeter of police and private security swiftly captured them all. A subsequent sweep of the vehicle’s interior by crime scene specialists uncovered a modified, unlicensed firearm with its serial number deliberately obliterated.
