A devastating collision between a police van and a heavy-duty truck on the R101 road between Mokopane and Mookgophong has left six people dead, including a police officer and five inmates.
The officer was transporting eleven inmates to the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court when the accident occurred. Preliminary reports indicate that the police van attempted to overtake the truck but collided with it, causing the van to overturn.
Fatalities and Injuries
The officer and five inmates lost their lives at the scene. Five other inmates were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The truck driver escaped unharmed.
Chaotic Scene and Emotional Aftermath
Family members of the deceased officer and one of the inmates rushed to the scene after receiving the tragic news. Relatives of the inmates had been waiting at the court to support their loved ones when they were informed of the crash.
“It’s traumatizing for them because this is the second incident they’ve experienced in their family,” said a witness at the scene. “For now, I can only say we are heartbroken, but time will heal.”
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Key questions include whether the officer was transporting the inmates alone, as regulations typically require additional personnel for such operations.
“The truck was reportedly about to make a turn at the intersection when the collision occurred,” a police spokesperson explained. “We have summoned all relevant parties to assist in the investigation.”
Road Closure and Traffic Disruptions
The R101 was closed for several hours following the crash, with traffic redirected to the nearby N1 highway.
Witnesses described the scene as horrific. “It’s very sad to see people lying like that,” one bystander said. “What happened here is truly horrifying.”
As the community mourns, authorities continue to piece together the events leading to this tragedy.
