The community of Phase 6 in Bloemfontein is reeling from a wave of violent killings, with residents saying at least 10 young people have been stabbed to death in the area over the past five years. The latest victim, a 27-year-old father of twin girls, was killed outside a local tavern last Sunday, sparking renewed outrage and calls for increased police visibility.
A Community in Mourning
Residents gathered in prayer this week, pleading for an end to the bloodshed while demanding justice for the victims. Gang violence and crime have long plagued the area, leaving families devastated.
“This has been happening for so long that we figured enough is enough,” said one resident. “Not only the youth have been killed because of gangs, but others have also lost their lives before this violence escalated. We stand with their families.”
The family of the latest victim remains in shock. The young father, whose twin daughters are just one year and three months old, was described as a beloved son.
“Mommy, I’m very weak. I don’t know what to say because it’s really a bad thing—more especially my only son. I don’t have a son anymore,” cried his grieving mother. “Junior is gone. My heart is broken. Even my wife… she can’t even concentrate.”
A Pattern of Violence
In December last year, a 36-year-old woman was also stabbed to death, allegedly by an ex-boyfriend. Her family recounted the horrifying moment she was attacked in public.
“My daughter was stabbed at the local tavern by her ex-boyfriend,” her mother said. “He pretended to hug her while stabbing her in front of everyone.”
Plea for Police Intervention
Frustrated by the ongoing violence, residents are urging law enforcement to increase patrols and crack down on criminals.
“We just want to be assisted by the police. We need their visibility,” said a community member. “We want to help them catch these criminals.”
Police have since arrested two suspects in connection with last Sunday’s murder, but the community fears more must be done to prevent further tragedies.
As Phase 6 mourns, the call for justice—and divine intervention—grows louder.
