The family of 20-year-old Gontse Makhubela, who was abducted and murdered in November 2023, says they can finally begin to heal after police arrested three suspects linked to her killing.

Makhubela was kidnapped while at work, and her decomposing body was later discovered in Elandrand, near Brits. The case remained unsolved for nearly two years until a breakthrough led to the arrests.

Suspects Appear in Court

Two of the accused recently appeared before the Brits Magistrates’ Court after being found in possession of Makhubela’s cellphone. A third suspect, a Mozambican traditional healer, is expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates’ Court on charges of kidnapping, murder, violating a corpse, and contravening immigration laws.

Isaac Makhubela, the victim’s uncle, expressed mixed emotions—relief that the case is progressing but anguish over the horrific nature of the crime.

“The family feels relieved, but also emotional because what happened to our niece was horrible,” he said. “She was buried without some of her body parts, which were allegedly sold for witchcraft purposes.”

A Crime During 16 Days of Activism

The abduction occurred between November 21 and 23, 2023—a period marked by the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, adding to the tragedy.

The investigation faced delays, partly due to suspects being undocumented migrants, making them difficult to trace. Makhubela called for stricter border controls to prevent criminals from entering the country illegally.

“We need to intensify security at the borders,” he said.

Justice in Sight

With the suspects now in custody, the family hopes for justice. Two have already appeared in court, while the third—linked to the mutilation of Makhubela’s remains—is set to face charges soon.

“We are pleased that those responsible will face justice,” Makhubela said.

The case continues as the North West police and prosecution work to secure convictions.
