OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, has commended police officers following a successful intelligence-driven operation in Mqanduli earlier today, which led to the recovery of three unlicensed firearms and the arrest of two suspects.

The operation, conducted by members of the OR Tambo District Task Team, unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, 10 August 2025. Acting on credible intelligence, officers executed a search warrant at a homestead in Mcombothi locality at approximately 03:30. During the raid, they discovered a shotgun with ammunition and a .303 rifle with ammunition—both unlicensed. A 60-year-old man was arrested on two counts of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Shortly afterward, at around 04:00, police proceeded to a second house in the same area, where they apprehended a 24-year-old man found in possession of a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off, along with ammunition. He was taken into custody for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Major General Modishana praised the swift execution of the operation, stating, “It took less than an hour to recover three illegal firearms. We are intensifying our intelligence-driven operations with the intent of fighting the proliferation of illegal firearms in the District.”

The two suspects, aged 24 and 60, are expected to appear before the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 August 2025, to face charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
