EASTERN CAPE — Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that Eastern Cape police are being deployed to identified hotspots ahead of planned protests scheduled for Tuesday. Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha, announced that extensive operational plans have been activated to maintain public order and ensure safety during the expected demonstrations.
The heightened security measures follow recent demonstrations against undocumented immigrants that have already taken place in several areas across the province, including Mdantsane, Matatiele, Mthatha, and KuGompo City. With further protests anticipated, authorities are proactively managing the situation to prevent potential unrest.
According to Nqatha, all eight districts of the Eastern Cape have been placed on high alert. Joint operational centers have been established in every district to coordinate responses and monitor developments in real time. These local centers will report directly to the provincial joint operational center, which will direct additional personnel and resources to any identified hotspots as needed.
To ensure public safety and maintain order should any demonstrations escalate, the police will be bolstered by the presence of the South African Defense Force.
Despite the heavy security presence, Nqatha emphasized a collaborative approach to the upcoming events. He stated that he has instructed all district commissioners and station commanders to engage directly with protest organizers. He stressed the importance of respecting the constitution and the public’s right to protest, while ensuring that all demonstrations remain peaceful.
Law enforcement officials also issued a strict warning to the public regarding vigilante actions. Authorities emphasized that citizens may not take on the responsibilities of immigration officials, traffic officers, or police officers during these demonstrations. Anyone found breaking the law or taking the law into their own hands will face the full might of the law.
