Members of the civic group Enough is Enough Solutions, alongside political parties including the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK Party), marched through Klerksdorp on Friday in a show of solidarity with KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The protest, dubbed “Hands Off Mkhwanazi,” follows the commissioner’s explosive allegations of political interference within crime intelligence, which he publicly revealed in July. Demonstrators are demanding an end to what they describe as attempts to undermine Mkhwanazi for exposing corruption.
March Against Political Meddling
The march culminated at the Matlosana police station, where protesters handed over a memorandum condemning alleged collusion between police and criminals, as well as political pressure on law enforcement.
Speaking to SABC News, a representative from Enough is Enough emphasized their support for Mkhwanazi’s stance:
“General Mkhwanazi had the courage to expose criminality within the SAPS when others stayed silent. Since he spoke out, we’ve seen government and political figures targeting him. We say enough is enough—hands off Mkhwanazi!”
Community Frustrations Over Crime and Corruption
Protesters also raised concerns about rampant crime in the North West, particularly illegal mining (zama zamas) and alleged police inaction.
“Police turn a blind eye to illegal activities, even working with criminals. We see it with zama zamas and undocumented foreigners. They pretend not to see, but we know the truth,” said one marcher.
Nationwide Echoes
Similar demonstrations have erupted in other provinces, reflecting growing public frustration over political interference in policing and perceived systemic corruption.
As tensions rise, all eyes remain on whether Mkhwanazi’s claims will lead to concrete investigations—or further backlash.
For now, Klerksdorp’s message is clear: “Hands off Mkhwanazi—the people stand with him.”
