A combination of sharp intuition and vigilance by the Port Alfred K9 Unit led to the arrest of two men found in possession of West Coast Rock Lobster tails worth over one million rand last night.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 27 July 2025, at approximately 20:30, when officers conducting routine patrols along the R72 highway noticed a suspicious Toyota Light Delivery Vehicle traveling toward East London. Upon stopping and searching the vehicle, police discovered boxes filled with West Coast Rock Lobster tails.

The two occupants, aged 34 and 62, failed to produce any valid permits or documentation authorizing them to possess or transport the marine resources. Authorities confiscated a total of 822.76 kilograms of lobster, with an estimated street value of R1,200,000.

Both suspects were arrested and charged with contravening the Marine Living Resources Act (Act 18 of 1998). They are expected to appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court soon.
