The Nquthu Regional Court on Wednesday sentenced 58-year-old Mandlelisa Mabhale to 10 life imprisonment terms plus an additional 70 years behind bars for the repeated rape of young children, sexual assault, and exposing minors to pornography.

Discovery of the Crimes

The horrific crimes came to light in September 2022 when a child minder overheard disturbing rumours about a local pastor with a reputation for sexually violating children. The minder grew suspicious as the four children under her care frequently visited Mabhale’s home and often assisted him with odd jobs, such as fixing electrical appliances.

Upon returning home, the minder questioned the children, but they initially remained silent. Later, they confided in their mother, revealing that Mabhale had been raping them. The mother immediately reported the matter to the police, sparking an urgent investigation.

Extent of the Abuse

Police uncovered that Mabhale had preyed on at least 10 minors, luring them to his rented room in the Ndidini area. There, he would force them to watch pornography before sexually assaulting them. The victims, all underage, provided harrowing testimonies that formed a crucial part of the case against him.

Arrest and Prosecution

Mabhale was arrested on 22 September 2022 at his hiding place in Luvisi. He was charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and exposing children to pornography. Despite his repeated attempts to secure bail, the court denied his requests each time.

Initially appearing at the Nquthu Magistrates Court, the case was later transferred to the Nquthu Regional Court, where Mabhale pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, overwhelming evidence presented by detectives proved his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Served

In delivering the sentence, the court emphasized the severity of Mabhale’s crimes, condemning his predatory actions against vulnerable children. The successful prosecution was attributed to meticulous investigative work, ensuring that the pastor faced the full might of the law.

With 10 life sentences and an additional 70 years in prison, Mabhale will spend the rest of his life behind bars, marking a significant victory in the fight against child sexual abuse in the region.
