The Khayelitsha Priority Court has handed down a 23-year prison sentence to Charles Williams, 51, for the kidnapping, murder, and obstruction of justice in the case of 57-year-old Charlene Overmeyer, whose body was found in a shallow grave weeks after her abduction.
The Crime
On 10 July 2024, at approximately 20:45, Overmeyer was forcibly taken from her home in St Montaque Village, Lavender, Steenberg, while watching TV with her family. The assailants, their faces concealed, cut the electricity before entering the house with a flashlight and dragging the victim out at gunpoint. They fled in a silver vehicle, leaving the family in shock.
Investigation and Arrests
The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation’s Anti-Kidnapping Task Team was activated to probe the case. After an intensive 40-day search, Overmeyer’s body was discovered in a shallow grave in Xakabuntu, Vrygrond, Muizenberg.
Three suspects were later arrested and linked to the crime:
-
Farried Williams (23)
-
Charles Williams (51)
-
Jason Arendse (31)
All three faced charges of kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice. Their bail was successfully opposed during multiple appearances at the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court, and the case was escalated to the Khayelitsha Priority Court.
Court Outcome
On Tuesday, 22 July 2025, the court withdrew charges against accused number 1 (Farried Williams) and accused number 3 (Jason Arendse). However, Charles Williams (accused number 2) was found guilty on all counts.
Sentencing
The court imposed the following sentences:
-
15 years for murder

5 years for kidnapping
-
3 years for defeating the ends of justice
The sentences will run consecutively, totaling 23 years imprisonment.
