Concerned community members of Dinokana, near Zeerust, are set to march to local authorities today to demand action against the escalating problem of drug and alcohol abuse in the area. Residents say the surge in substance abuse has led to increased crime, leaving many feeling unsafe.

The march, organized by schools, parents, and tribal leaders, aims to raise awareness and push for stronger interventions. Stakeholders, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Correctional Services, will deliver presentations on combating substance abuse and its societal impact.

Schools Hit Hard by Drug Abuse

Boratamadi Primary School principal highlighted the alarming effect of drugs on learners, stating that substance abuse disrupts education and leads to behavioral issues.

“We are challenged with learners using drugs daily,” the principal said. “They come to school under the influence—sleeping in class, disrespecting teachers, and disrupting lessons. This affects not just them, but the entire learning environment.”

The principal expressed concern over students accessing drugs within the community, particularly during exam periods when older learners move between schools.

Community Calls for Action

Local leaders emphasized that parents and community members must take responsibility in curbing drug access. The march will proceed to a nearby school, where officials will engage with stakeholders on solutions.

Substance abuse is a nationwide issue, Dinokana’s situation is particularly severe, affecting even young students.

Authorities hope today’s demonstrations will spur long-term strategies to address the crisis.
