Women in Bawa Village, Butterworth, say they are living in constant fear following a recent surge in violent attacks against women, including the brutal rape and murder of a 102-year-old woman last week.
The victim, Nontsumpa Mbayimbayi, was allegedly attacked while sleeping in her home. According to reports, an unknown assailant entered through a window, assaulted her, and killed her. The gruesome crime has sent shockwaves through the small community, where residents say gender-based violence (GBV) has become an escalating crisis.
Local women say they no longer feel safe, even in their own homes. “We are terrified. How can a 102-year-old grandmother not be safe in her own house?” asked one distraught resident. “This has to stop.”
Community leaders and activists are calling for urgent intervention from law enforcement and government officials. “We need more police patrols, better lighting, and harsher consequences for perpetrators,” said a local women’s rights advocate. “Our elders, our mothers, and our daughters deserve to live without fear.”
