A devastating explosion tore through the Slovo Park informal settlement in Springs yesterday, injuring at least two people, wounding several others, and leaving scores homeless. Authorities, including the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services and the bomb squad, are still investigating the cause of the blast.
Scene of Destruction
Eyewitnesses and reporters at the scene described widespread damage, with multiple homes reduced to rubble. Among the worst affected was an RDP house that was completely destroyed, while neighboring structures suffered severe damage, including shattered windows and collapsed walls.
Residents recounted the terrifying moment of the explosion, with one woman explaining that she was at work when the blast occurred, only to return and find her home in ruins. “Everything is just broken. It’s completely gone,” she said emotionally.
Unclear Cause, Bomb Squad Investigating
While initial reports suggested a possible gas explosion, officials have not confirmed the cause. The bomb squad was called in after emergency responders realized the extent of the damage was beyond a typical fire incident. Police combed the area for hours, indicating the severity of the situation.
Some residents speculated about possible links to illegal mining activity, a persistent issue in Ekurhuleni. The area is part of Johannesburg’s mining belt, where illegal miners, known as zama zamas, have previously been involved in violent clashes and underground explosions.
Community in Despair
With homes destroyed, many residents were left without shelter, forced to salvage what remained of their belongings. One man was seen attempting to make coffee amid the wreckage of his collapsed kitchen.
Local authorities have yet to provide assistance to those displaced, leaving families in urgent need of aid. The investigation continues, with officials expected to release further details in the coming days.
For now, the traumatized community of Slovo Park waits for answers—and help—as they grapple with the aftermath of the explosion.
