The parents of one of the suspects arrested in connection with the kidnapping of Bloemfontein teenager Kamogelo Baukudi have revealed shocking claims made by the victim—alleging that police officers were involved in his abduction.

Baukudi, who went missing on June 5, was found on June 27 in Wepener, over 100 kilometers from Bloemfontein, after being missing for more than 20 days. According to accounts from those who assisted him, the teenager refused to involve the police upon his rescue, insisting that his kidnappers were working with law enforcement.

Suspects Released Due to Lack of Evidence

Four suspects initially arrested in the case were released on Monday after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) dropped charges, citing insufficient evidence. Among those detained was a 42-year-old police sergeant, fueling further suspicions about police involvement.

The parents of one of the accused, Tabang Jali, spoke out about the ordeal, explaining that their son and another man, Justice Mushu, brought Baukudi to their home after finding him on the street. The teenager reportedly begged for help returning to Bloemfontein but refused police intervention.

Victim’s Distrust of Police

“Gamo was very reluctant to call the police or seek their assistance because he told us that the police were part of his kidnapping,” said Maritar Tbe, Tabang’s mother.

Baukudi’s family was contacted, and arrangements were made for his safe return. However, the allegations of police complicity have raised serious concerns.

Legal Fallout Possible

Legal representatives for the released suspects have hinted at potential civil action, given the damage to their reputations. Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate the kidnapping, with the arrested police sergeant’s role under scrutiny.

As the case unfolds, questions remain about the credibility of Baukudi’s claims and whether further arrests will follow. The NPA has not ruled out reinstating charges if new evidence emerges.
