Njunga, Mzimkhulu – A family in the rural village of Njunga is living in fear as their crumbling mud house threatens to collapse at any moment. The Tshangase family, consisting of 57-year-old Omthandazo Tshangase and her 17-year-old son, endure freezing nights in the dilapidated structure, with little protection from the harsh winter cold.
The home, barely standing, has gaping holes that Tshangase tries to cover with corrugated iron sheets. With no electricity or running water, the family survives on the generosity of neighbors and donations, as Tshangase does not receive any social grants.
“When it gets cold, we suffer. Recently, when there was snow, we were freezing inside this house,” she said. Her eldest children search for temporary jobs to help, but their income is not enough to secure a safer home.
Local community leaders have raised concerns, not only about the family’s living conditions but also their safety. “It’s tough. She sleeps here with her young son in this unstable house,” said one leader.
The family is now pleading for assistance from anyone willing to help them rebuild or find safer shelter. As winter continues, their need grows more urgent.
How to Help: Those wishing to assist the Tshangase family can contact local community organizations in Mzimkhulu or reach out to regional social services for donation options.
