
A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective 18 years in prison for a violent home invasion and rape in the Phomolong informal settlement of Bloemspruit. The swift response of the victim and a thorough investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) ensured his immediate arrest and conviction.
The horrific incident occurred in the early hours around 02:00, when the 21-year-old victim was asleep in her home. Her 36-year-old neighbor, the convicted perpetrator, began banging on her door, demanding entry. Despite her refusal, he forcibly kicked the door open, breaking it down. He then raped her in front of her four-year-old daughter, who cried uncontrollably during the attack.
After the assault, the suspect allegedly offered the victim R1,500 and warned her not to tell his wife. Displaying immense courage, the victim fled to a neighbor’s home, where authorities were alerted. Police swiftly arrested the suspect, who has remained in custody since.
The Bloemspruit SAPS initially opened cases of housebreaking with intent to rape and rape. The investigation was later transferred to the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, led by Sergeant Tiisetso Lentsa. Collaborating with Advocate Herholdt, the prosecution secured a conviction on both charges.
In sentencing, the Bloemfontein Regional Court imposed 18 years imprisonment for rape and an additional 5 years for housebreaking with intent to rape. However, the court ordered that 4 years of the housebreaking sentence run concurrently with the rape sentence, resulting in an effective 18-year prison term.
