In a dramatic breakthrough, 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi, who was abducted in Bloemfontein more than 20 days ago, has been found alive in Wepener, Free State. Police confirmed his safe recovery following an intelligence-led operation that also led to the arrest of five additional suspects.

Police Operation Leads to Rescue

Free State SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele revealed that authorities acted on critical intelligence early this morning, locating Baukudi with three suspects on a street in a Wepener township. Two more suspects were arrested at a nearby house believed to have been used to hold the teenager captive.

“The operation was smooth, with no resistance encountered,” said Brigadier Makhele. “Kamogelo is safe with his parents and shows no visible injuries, though he will undergo medical evaluation as a precaution.”

Growing Number of Suspects

The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects in the case to six, including a 42-year-old police sergeant who had previously appeared in court in connection with the abduction. Authorities are now interrogating the newly arrested individuals to determine their possible links to the initial suspect.

Baukudi was kidnapped earlier this month while being transported from school in Bloemfontein. His disappearance sparked widespread concern, with reports of a R7 million ransom demand circulating on social media. However, police have declined to confirm these claims, stating that all details will be presented in court.

Court Appearance Expected Soon

The five suspects are expected to join the sergeant in court on Monday, June 30, where further developments in the case will be disclosed. Investigators are also reviewing phone records, including calls made to Baukudi’s family, to determine the full extent of the kidnapping plot.

Wepener is located approximately 80 kilometers from Bloemfontein, raising questions about how the victim was moved between the two towns. Police have not yet disclosed a motive but assured the public that investigations are ongoing.

Family Safety Under Review

When asked about additional security for Baukudi’s family, Brigadier Makhele stated that authorities would assess the need based on the investigation’s progress.

The successful rescue has brought relief to the community, though many questions remain unanswered as police work to unravel the full scope of the abduction scheme.
