The North West Health Department has appointed a nine-member investigation team to probe the death of a long-term patient at Witrand Psychiatric Hospital, following allegations of severe neglect and sexual assault.

The case came to light after the family of 40-year-old Quinton Du Plessis opened criminal charges, revealing disturbing details about his final days. According to his sister, Colette Du Plessis, Quinton was found unresponsive and transferred to Potchefstroom Hospital, where medical staff discovered extensive bruises and a positive rape kit result indicating a recent assault.

“I Trusted Them With My Brother’s Life”

In an emotional account, Colette described her shock upon seeing her brother’s battered body. “I pulled the blankets from Quinton and saw all the bruises. I took pictures and demanded a rape kit, which came back positive—it was fresh, not even seven days old,” she said.

After confronting Witrand Hospital officials, she claims they dismissed her concerns. “They took notes and asked me to keep quiet for 25 days while they investigated. I can’t do that,” she said, accusing the facility of failing in its duty to protect vulnerable patients.

Department Vows Swift Investigation

The Health Department confirmed that the probe will also examine the recent escape of a patient from Mahikeng Provincial Hospital. Department spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane stated, “We understand that SAPS is also investigating, and we respect that process. We call on communities, patients, and staff to allow the investigation time.”

The MEC has directed the team, led by a seasoned clinician, to deliver a full report by August 1—a date that carries painful significance, as it would have been Quinton’s 41st birthday.

Calls for Accountability

The case has sparked outrage, with advocates demanding justice for Quinton and stricter oversight in psychiatric facilities. The family insists they will not remain silent, pushing for transparency and accountability from the hospital management.

As investigations unfold, the North West Health Department faces mounting pressure to address systemic failures and ensure the safety of its most vulnerable patients.
