Residents of Mmasebudule village in Lehurutshe have raised alarm over the surge in illegal chrome mining activities in their area, accusing the Bahurutshe Boo Manyane tribal authority of collaborating with mining companies to exploit resources unlawfully.

South Africa, the world’s largest chrome producer, has seen a rise in illegal mining operations, and Mmasebudule is no exception. Locals claim that the tribal council has failed to protect their land, allowing unregulated extraction that deprives the community of formal employment opportunities and government revenue.

“The claim that we have failed the community is not true,” countered a representative of the Bahurutshe Boo Manyane tribal authority. “We have always endeavored to secure a fair deal for our people in Mmasebudule.” The authority denied allegations of collusion, insisting that they are committed to lawful mining practices.

The tribal leader also vowed to clamp down on illegal miners, commonly known as zama-zamas, stating, “I am not going to allow the zama-zamas in Mmasebudule—not over my dead body. We have referred this matter to state security organs, and we will not tolerate illegal mining.”

Despite these assurances, the community remains skeptical, fearing that unchecked mining operations will continue to deprive them of economic benefits while causing environmental degradation. Calls for greater transparency and stricter enforcement of mining regulations have grown louder as tensions escalate.

Authorities have yet to announce concrete steps to address the situation, leaving residents in a standoff with both mining operators and tribal leadership.
