A 45-year-old man is set to appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, 23 June 2025, facing a charge of murder following the death of his 41-year-old wife. The victim’s body was discovered by her son in their Riverside home last week.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 20 June 2025, at approximately 16:00. Police were alerted to a possible murder and arrived at the scene, where they were met by the deceased’s son. He led officers to the bathroom, where his mother’s lifeless body was found in a bathtub with a deep open wound to the head.

According to the son, who does not live at the residence, he had visited his mother and found the house locked. After forcing entry through the kitchen door, he discovered signs of a violent altercation, including a broken mirror, bloodstains on the walls, and running water from the bathroom. Upon entering, he found his mother unresponsive in the bathtub and immediately alerted a neighbour, who contacted the authorities.

The victim’s husband, who was not present at the time, later contacted police and disclosed his location. He was subsequently arrested, and the alleged murder weapon was recovered and confiscated by investigators.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court today for his initial hearing. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
