Ceileigh Niedermayr is set to make history as the first South African woman signed to the globally acclaimed Professional Fighters League (PFL). The Durban-born MMA fighter, nicknamed the “Smiley Savage”, will step into the PFL cage for the first time on July 19th in Cape Town, where she will face Nigeria’s formidable Juliet Akah in a highly anticipated showdown at Grand West Arena.
A Fighter Forged Through Adversity
Niedermayr, who trains in Johannesburg, has carved her path in the male-dominated world of MMA with a unique blend of skill, resilience, and infectious positivity. With a professional record of 3-2 and an amateur record of 7-1, her journey has been anything but easy. She has fought in less-than-ideal conditions in the past, but now, with the PFL’s arrival in South Africa, she finally has the platform to showcase her talent on a professional stage.
The Power of Positivity in Combat
Known for her trademark grin even in the heat of battle, Niedermayr credits her success to her unshakable mindset. “Negative emotions like anger or frustration don’t help me perform,” she says. “I thrive when I’m happy, having fun in the moment. Even when I get hit hard, I smile back—that’s where I find my strength.”
Her journey in martial arts began at just five years old, starting with karate before progressing to kickboxing and eventually MMA. Unlike many athletes, she never participated in traditional school sports, instead dedicating her life to combat disciplines.
Inspired by Her Support System
While many fighters draw motivation from rivals, Niedermayr finds her drive in her family, friends, and team. “My ride-or-dies, the people who stand behind me no matter what—that’s where I get my real inspiration,” she explains.
Testing Limits Against a Tough Opponent
Her upcoming fight against Nigeria’s Juliet Akah will be her toughest challenge yet. But for Niedermayr, pushing her limits is the ultimate satisfaction. “I tell myself I’m there to discover where my limit is,” she says. “How often in life do we actually get to test if we are who we say we are?”
With her relentless spirit and signature smile, Ceileigh Niedermayr is ready to make her mark in the PFL—and inspire a new generation of African women in MMA.
Don’t miss her historic debut on July 19th at Grand West Arena, Cape Town, as the “Smiley Savage” steps into the spotlight.
