A small village in Queenstown (Komani) , Eastern Cape, was engulfed in grief today as 14-year-old Likhona Fose was laid to rest. The young girl’s life was brutally cut short earlier this month when her mutilated body was discovered in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, a day after she went missing.
A Life Cut Short
Likhona, a Grade 8 pupil, was remembered by family and community members as a vibrant and ambitious girl with a bright future ahead. During her funeral service, speakers described her as “bubbly” and full of dreams. However, her life was allegedly taken in what her family believes was a hate crime linked to her sexual orientation.
“She was accepted for who she was—a member of the LGBTQI+ community—but someone hated her for it,” a family member disclosed. Reports indicate that her body was found with severe mutilation, including injuries to her private parts, deepening the horror of the crime.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have charged one suspect in connection with Likhona’s murder, but disturbing new details suggest a second suspect—allegedly the mastermind behind the killing—may be from outside South Africa. The family has called for swift justice, urging law enforcement to expedite the investigation.
“We want justice for Likhona,” a relative said during the service. “We are working with the police to ensure those responsible face the consequences.”
A Community in Mourning
The funeral drew emotional tributes, with mourners struggling to comprehend the brutality inflicted on the young girl. The case has sparked outrage, with activists and community leaders condemning gender-based violence and hate crimes.
As the investigation continues, the family and community remain hopeful that all involved will be held accountable. For now, they bid farewell to a child whose life was stolen far too soon.
Updates on the case are expected as the second suspect prepares for court proceedings.
