Red Bull Symphonic is set to return this year with a landmark event, featuring amapiano pioneer Kelvin Momo as the headlining act. The genre-defying experience, scheduled for later this year, will see Momo’s soulful, jazz-infused amapiano sound reimagined alongside the Egoli Symphonic Orchestra, under the musical direction of renowned UK-born composer Adam Howard.
A Fusion of Worlds
The Red Bull Symphonic series, known for bridging orchestral and contemporary music, made waves last year with Kabza De Small’s historic debut. This year, Momo—celebrated for his “private school amapiano” style—will take center stage, blending his signature log drums and lush chords with a full symphony orchestra.
In an exclusive interview, Howard, who has worked with artists like Oskido, TKZee, and Joyous Celebration, revealed the ambitious vision behind the collaboration. “This activation is trying to marry the orchestral world and the amapiano world,” he said. “I’ve got one foot in the commercial scene and one in the orchestral world, so I can speak to both.”
Breaking Barriers in Music
Howard emphasized preserving the authenticity of Momo’s sound while elevating it with orchestral arrangements. The ensemble will include traditional African instruments like kalimbas, talking drums, and marimbas, alongside classical strings, woodwinds, and a jazz-inspired brass section. “The orchestra isn’t just for Beethoven—it’s a forward-thinking ensemble,” Howard noted, challenging perceptions of orchestral music as elitist.
Momo’s jazz influences, inherited from his father, add a unique layer to the project. “His music is spiritual, with minor 9ths and 7ths—it takes you on a journey,” Howard remarked, praising Momo’s willingness to defy industry norms, like extended track lengths uncommon in mainstream radio.
A New Era for South African Music
The event aims to democratize orchestral music, introducing it to audiences who might never have experienced it. “People will see an orchestra playing ‘Sukakude’ or ‘Cry’ and realize it’s for everyone,” Howard said. Last year, his viral trumpet solo during Kabza’s set became a talking point, and this time, he’ll serve as both musical director and conductor.
Red Bull’s investment in cultural innovation continues to push boundaries, with Momo’s Symphonic debut poised to be a milestone. “It’s a two-hour journey of highs and lows,” Howard teased. “The audience will leave transformed.”
