Pretoria, South Africa – The stage is set for a thrilling United Rugby Championship (URC) semi-final showdown as the Bulls host the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening. However, both teams face significant challenges heading into the high-stakes encounter.
Etzebeth Sidelined, Goosen Returns
The Sharks will be without their towering lock and enforcer, Eben Etzebeth, dealing a major blow to their pack. Compounding their injury woes, the Durban-based side will also miss Eben Etzebeth and Jason Jenkins, leaving coach John Plumtree to rely on young replacements Corne Rahl and Emile van Heerden.
Meanwhile, the Bulls have received a boost with Johan Goosen, their first-choice flyhalf, cleared to play. Coach Jake White has made just one change to the starting XV that defeated Edinburgh in the quarter-finals, recalling Johan Goosen to bolster their kicking game.
Fatigue a Factor for Sharks
White believes the Sharks’ gruelling 100-minute quarter-final victory over Munster last week will leave them vulnerable.
“100 minutes will affect them,” White said. “It’s like tennis—if you play five sets, you’re more fatigued in the next match.”
Plumtree acknowledged the challenge but remained optimistic, saying, “I’m sure it’s going to be a close game. I hope it doesn’t go to a shootout, but you never know.”
Bulls Eye Third Final in Four Seasons
The Pretoria side, aiming for their third URC final in four years, will bank on a sold-out Loftus crowd for support. White emphasised the importance of continuity, with 14 or 15 players from last week’s win retaining their spots.
For the Sharks, this marks their first URC semi-final, while the Bulls are in their second consecutive home semi-final.
Kick-off is at 18:00 (SAST) on Saturday.
