Johannesburg, South Africa – Members of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit were forced to retreat after being attacked by residents in Westbury while arresting a suspected dagga (cannabis) dealer on Tuesday. The incident, captured on video, shows officers facing a barrage of rocks and bottles hurled by community members.

Outrage Over Attack on Police

Lesiba Thobakgale, spokesperson for the South African Policing Union (SAPU), expressed shock at the violent response to what he described as officers “executing their constitutional mandate.”

“We are shocked to see such a reaction when the police are doing their job,” Thobakgale said in an interview. “In an area like Westbury, where crime is rampant, one would expect the community to welcome police efforts to combat drug dealing and gang activity.”

He condemned the attackers as “criminal elements,” stating that obstructing police work is a crime itself. “An attack on the police is an attack on the state, and it should be treated as such,” Thobakgale emphasized.

Police Show Restraint Amid Violence

Despite the aggression, Thobakgale praised the officers for their restraint, noting that the situation could have escalated dangerously.

“The members retreated in a manner that ensured their safety without being confrontational,” he said. “We commend their professionalism in avoiding further conflict.”

However, he assured that the retreat does not mean the Anti-Gang Unit will abandon its operations in Westbury. “They will continue their work to dismantle gang activity and drug trade in the area,” he said.

Community-Police Relations Under Strain

The incident highlights growing tensions between law enforcement and some residents in crime-ridden communities. Thobakgale stressed the importance of community-police collaboration, urging local leaders, including church officials and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), to mediate and rebuild trust.

“Social dialogue is crucial,” he said. “The police cannot neglect Westbury, and the community cannot reject policing. Our common enemy is crime, not each other.”

Broader Crime Challenges

The attack comes amid rising concerns over gang violence and gender-based crime in South Africa. Thobakgale acknowledged police resource shortages but expressed confidence in their ability to tackle crime, citing recent successes in tracking down suspects in high-profile cases.

“We must work together to fight crime,” he said. “If we see something, we must report it—because crime affects everyone.”

Ongoing Investigations

SAPS has launched an investigation into the attack, with authorities vowing to identify and prosecute those responsible. Meanwhile, the Anti-Gang Unit is expected to resume operations in Westbury, reinforcing efforts to curb gang-related crime.

As tensions simmer, the incident raises urgent questions about policing strategies, community trust, and South Africa’s broader struggle against crime and lawlessness.
