Johannesburg, Gauteng – In celebration of Youth Month, Joburg Theatre is paying tribute to the late South African cultural icon Dr. Mbongeni Ngema with a revival of his globally acclaimed musical Sarafina, running from May 30 to June 15, 2025.
Originally composed and directed by Ngema, Sarafina is a powerful theatrical masterpiece that captured the struggles and resilience of Black South Africans during apartheid. The 2025 production, directed by Mpho Molepo and choreographed by Nompumelelo Gumede-Ngema, seeks to honor Ngema’s legacy while reigniting the play’s timeless message of youth activism.
A Tribute to a Legend
Ngema, who passed away in late 2023, rose to international prominence in the 1980s with works that boldly confronted apartheid’s injustices. Sarafina, which later became a hit film starring Whoopi Goldberg, remains a cultural touchstone, blending stirring music, dance, and political defiance.
In an interview, director Mpho Molepo expressed humility in helming the tribute. “No one can replace Dr. Ngema, but to be entrusted with honoring his work is one of the greatest honors,” he said.
A Timeless Call to Action
Though set during the 1976 Soweto Uprising, Sarafina’s themes of youth empowerment remain strikingly relevant. Molepo emphasized that the production stays true to its historical roots while resonating with today’s challenges. “Sarafina is a call for young people to rise and take action in their society—a message that transcends generations,” he noted.
A Collective Effort
The 2025 staging features a mix of new talent and veterans, including one cast member who has been with Sarafina since its inception. Molepo highlighted the collaborative process, relying on shared memories and artistic contributions to preserve the play’s essence.
Strong Audience Reception
Since its May 30 preview, the revival has drawn packed houses and enthusiastic responses. With performances extending through Youth Day (June 16), the theatre expects even greater turnout as audiences reconnect with Ngema’s enduring vision.
“We hope many come to experience this tribute,” said Molepo. “Joburg Theatre has taken a meaningful step in honoring Dr. Ngema’s legacy.”
