The Sharks made history on Saturday, advancing to the United Rugby Championship (URC) semi-finals for the first time after a heart-stopping 6-4 place-kick shootout victory over Munster following a 24-24 draw after extra time.
In a match filled with twists and turns, Rory Scannell’s missed penalty in the shootout proved decisive, while Sharks kickers Jordan Hendrikse, Jaden Hendrikse, and Bradley Davids held their nerve, converting all six of their attempts. Munster’s Jack Crowley and Conor Murray also nailed their kicks, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the South African side from securing a historic win.
Thrilling Encounter Goes Down to the Wire
The quarter-final at Kings Park was a rollercoaster from start to finish. Munster struck first, with Calvin Nash’s converted try giving them a 7-0 halftime lead. The Sharks fought back early in the second half, as Ethan Hooker crossed the line and Jaden Hendrikse added a penalty to put the hosts ahead 10-7.
Munster responded with tries from Josh Wycherley and Diarmuid Kilgallen, seemingly taking control of the match. But the Sharks refused to surrender, with Aphelele Fassi and Fez Mbatha scoring to reclaim a three-point lead. Just as the game looked to be slipping away, Conor Murray stepped up with a monster penalty in the 77th minute, leveling the scores at 24-24 and sending the match into extra time.
With no further points scored in the additional 20 minutes, the contest went to a rare place-kicking shootout—a first in the Sharks’ URC history. The home side kept their composure, while Scannell’s crucial miss handed them a famous victory.
Historic Semi-Final Awaits
The Sharks, who had previously fallen at the quarter-final stage twice, will now face South African rivals the Bulls in Pretoria next weekend. The other semi-final sees Irish powerhouse Leinster take on Glasgow Warriors.
The victory marks a new chapter for the Sharks, who will now aim to continue their dream run and secure a place in the URC final.
